AbstractThis webinar will gather experts and practitioners working to support hate crime victims in Spain to discuss the community and societal impact of hate crimes, as well as the distinct and varied needs of hate crime victims. The event will be held in Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation to English. Participants will explore ways to promote an individualized and victim-centred approach to meeting hate crime victims’ needs, taking into account their multiple and overlapping identities. Discussions will focus on the role of sensitive and respectful treatment in building trust between hate crime victims and representatives of law enforcement, civil society and national authorities. Why is this important? Hate crimes send a message of exclusion to victims and their communities while undermining social cohesion. These crimes have a significant impact on victims; a robust hate crime victim support structure is therefore critical to ensuring that victims of hate crime have access to justice and the protection and support they need. Background The webinar is organized as part of a joint initiative of ODIHR and the European Commission on Strengthening Targeted Assistance and Response Structures for Hate Crime Victims in the OSCE Region (STARS). The initiative is funded by the European Union through the “Support to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) for knowledge sharing and standard setting on hate crime including hate crime victim support” (CERV-2023-IM-CRAC/RIGH/2), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy.
